Aran Prog Project, created by Italian bassist and composer Massimiliano ‘MarFi’ Gentilini, has been roaming within the progressive metal scene since 2018. Initially conceived as a remote collaboration among session musicians, the project aimed to fuse progressive metal with elements of jazz, funk, electronic music, and more. Over time, Aran has grown into a full band based in Barcelona, marking its live debut at the Totum Revolutum festival in 2023. Their 2022 album, Evo – A Progressive Journey, saw Gentilini and over 20 collaborators explore the vast themes of Earth’s history and human evolution. This year, Aran Prog Project are embarking on a new chapter with two singles, including the original track “Everything Ends,” which serves as an intriguing prelude to their upcoming album, a conceptual piece dedicated to the multifaceted history of the First World War. They also recently released a cover of VOLA’s popular track “Straight Lines,” giving it a refreshing twist and adding their own flair to it.
With “Everything Ends,” Aran Prog Project lean into a more classic progressive rock-meets-metal soundscape. The band blends elements of both traditional and modern prog, bringing them together in a way that feels both nostalgic and forward-looking. While progressive music has recently seen a surge in modern elements, APP maintains a balance by revisiting classic prog staples—moog solos, recurring themes, and complex instrumentation—that lend the track a timeless quality. They adeptly straddle the line between rock and metal, with “Everything Ends” clocking in at nearly 10 minutes, signaling their ambitious approach.
Aran Prog Project’s sound nods to the iconic bands that left a lasting mark on the genre decades ago, yet they manage to craft an identity that feels genuine and current. If “Everything Ends” is any indication, their forthcoming concept album promises to be a thrilling journey for fans of progressive rock and metal alike.
