With the release of his debut album, Forever Alive, Gusmano blends his deep-rooted love for progressive rock, blues, and jazz with a passion for evocative storytelling through music. His path has been shaped by legendary influences, world-class collaborations, and a dedication to giving back to his community. In this interview, we delve into the inspirations behind Forever Alive, the impact of working with renowned producer James Lugo, and Gusmano’s vision for the future of his music.
How did growing up with the classic sounds of the Hammond B3 Organ shape your approach to music?
First and foremost, I want to extend my deepest gratitude to Niko and everyone at Prog Sphere for the opportunity to share my musical journey with your readers! From the moment I first started listening to music, the sound of the Hammond B3 Organ immediately captivated me. Whether it was the soulful playing of Billy Preston or the powerful, electrifying sound of Jon Lord, the B3’s distinct tone profoundly shaped my approach to the keyboard. It taught me how to craft soundscapes that not only support a song but also bring melodies to the forefront. Today, I feel truly blessed to be an official artisan for Hammond Organ USA, surrounded by the incredible musicians of the “Ham-Fam.” Their passion and talent continue to inspire me and help keep this iconic sound alive for generations to come. Thank you to Scott May and everyone at Hammond for influencing me and my music!!
You’ve been playing piano and organ since an early age. What drew you to these instruments, and how has your relationship with them evolved over time?
I began my musical journey at the age of five when my parents enrolled me in traditional piano lessons. These lessons focused on classical music and theory, but at the time, they didn’t resonate with me. Eventually, I stepped away to explore and discover myself both artistically and personally. It wasn’t until the COVID-19 pandemic when the world felt uncertain and overwhelming… that music became my guiding light. It reignited my passion, bringing me joy on every level and allowing me to fully immerse myself in the genres that truly inspire me.
The pandemic gave you time to focus on your studies and recording new material. How did that period influence the creation of Forever Alive?
With the abundance of free time during the pandemic, I had the incredible opportunity to revisit and re-learn the fundamentals of keyboard and B3 playing. The technology we have today is truly remarkable… It’s amazing how much it has evolved. With platforms like YouTube, you can now learn any song or technique from start to finish. During this time, my dad, Peter Gusmano, introduced me to the world of studio recording. We went on to record my single, Make A Difference, and that experience set everything in motion from there. Now, with the release of Forever Alive, it represents my artistic journey from its very beginning to where I am today. It reflects how my music has evolved, fueled by the love and dedication that have shaped this path.

Your debut album features an impressive lineup of musicians, including your father, Peter Gusmano. How did these collaborations come about, and what was it like working with them?
Working on Forever Alive, alongside my incredibly supportive mom and dad, family, friends, and the phenomenal studio musicians, was the most rewarding experience of my life. These world-class musicians brought the record to life, and I couldn’t have done it without them. Each one contributed their own unique flair to the compositions. Peter Gusmano’s melodic passages, Rob Balducci’s powerful harmonies and sound, Hugo Lee’s killer saxophone hooks, Yoed Nir’s mesmerizing string arrangements, Tony Franklin’s virtuoso fretless bass playing (The Firm, Blue Murder), Trent Williamson’s soulful harmonica, and Scott Foster Harris’s strong, blues-driven voice. All of them helped turn my concept into a reality. I’m beyond grateful for their support and collaboration.
Forever Alive blends jazz fusion with various instrumental influences. What were some of your biggest inspirations when composing these tracks?
Jazz fusion, along with blues and progressive rock, are genres I’ve loved for as long as I can remember. Some of my biggest influences include Joe Satriani, Steve Lukather, Billy Cobham, Eric Clapton, KISS, Buddy Guy, Christopher Cross, David Paich, and many others. Their music has been a true outlet for learning, absorbing, and enjoying, while also deeply influencing my sound and songwriting journey.
As someone passionate about recreating timeless organ, piano, and synth tones, what’s your process for crafting the perfect sound for a song?
When shaping sounds… whether in a recording studio or during a live performance, the gear you use is crucial to the output you can create. For me, the quintessential instrument in developing my synth leads, rich-sounding pianos, wide stereo electric pianos, and ripping B3 organ tones is the Hammond SK Pro 73. Its versatility and ability to produce strong, dynamic sounds have allowed me to explore a wide variety of tonal options.
Additionally, Forever Alive features incredible keyboard sounds from programs such as Keyscape, IK Multimedia Hammond B-3X, Addictive Keys, and finally Allan Lobo’s Rush Keys Deluxe Package. Lobo’s Rush sounds had a significant impact on the record, adding to its dynamic character by sampling the timeless tones of Geddy Lee and his 1970s Moogs. Overall, these sound packs played a pivotal role in shaping the final sound of the record and contributed significantly to its full, rich tone.
You’ve worked with many local musicians and youth groups on Long Island. How has that experience shaped your artistry?
Living here in beautiful Long Island, NY, I’ve been blessed to play music with so many wonderful people in the community. Since music has given me so much, I believe it’s incredibly important to give back through the power of music. That’s why I often perform at various senior facilities on the Island, including The Bristal Assisted Living Facilities, where I treat seniors to an hour-long performance of classic hits like Sinatra and Elvis, along with some of my original material.
Seeing the smiles on people’s faces has had the most profound impact on my heart and on the way I compose music today.
Winning the Long Island Reflections for the Arts Program five times and the NY Award of Merit is an impressive achievement. How have these recognitions impacted your career?
Accepting these awards has been a true blessing, but more importantly, they’ve allowed me to evolve as a songwriter over the past five years. From the first song I wrote to this new record, I’ve developed a more mature approach to my songwriting. I’ve also had the privilege of meeting incredible musicians from around the world who have shared their wisdom, and I’ve been surrounded by loving family and friends who inspire me to keep moving forward every day.
What was the most challenging aspect of recording Forever Alive, and what was the most rewarding?
I strongly believe that the most challenging yet ultimately rewarding aspect of writing this album was developing melodies that listeners could truly resonate with. I love listening to songs that stay with me, where hours later I’m still humming the melody. That was my main objective in writing this album: to showcase musicianship and demonstrate how melodic music can leave a lasting impact on everyone. The most rewarding experience was mixing and mastering this project with James Lugo in Nashville, TN, alongside my dad. The depth and richness of the sound we captured still amazes me each time I listen to Forever Alive.
James Lugo produced the album—how did his influence shape the final sound?
When it came time to complete the recording of the album, I made it my mission to find a producer who would truly invest in my project and work with me every step of the way until my vision became a reality. Collaborating with James was one of the best decisions I’ve made in my musical career. He was able to create a cohesive, raw, and powerful sound from start to finish that brought out the expressive and dynamic qualities of each song. Beyond his technical expertise, James is one of the most humane and compassionate producers I’ve encountered. His advice throughout the process was invaluable, and I will forever be grateful for all he did to make this album so special. I’m incredibly excited to work with James on future music projects!
Your music spans multiple genres, from jazz fusion to holiday instrumentals. Do you see yourself continuing to explore a wide range of styles in the future?
100%. While instrumental music and jazz will always have a special place in my heart, I believe it’s essential to explore different genres and styles. Doing so not only diversifies your playing abilities but also teaches you so much along the way.

What do you hope listeners take away from Forever Alive?
I truly hope that anyone who listens to Forever Alive sees how this album reflects my artistic journey from its beginning to where I am now, showcasing the love and passion that have been fostered along the way. Additionally, I want people to know that Forever Alive is more than just a musical project—it’s a way to give back to the community. When anyone purchases a CD from www.justingusmano.com, 20% of each sale will be donated to Tunnels to Towers, an incredible organization dedicated to supporting veterans and 9/11 survivors.
Do you have any upcoming projects, live performances, or new material in the works?
I’m constantly creating new music in my home studio, Beverly Studios, alongside my dad. The opportunity to write, develop, and nurture songs with the people I love most has been the greatest honor of my life. I’m excited to see what the future holds!
