The drama of progressive rock, the weight of heavy riffs, and the nuanced textures of jazz intertwine seamlessly on Contours, Vol. 2, the latest release from San Francisco-based multi-instrumentalist, composer, and mathematician Jake Gotlieb. Arriving eight months after its predecessor, the album elevates Gotlieb’s craft, bolstered by outstanding production quality that amplifies its emotional and sonic depth.
The eight meticulously composed and arranged tracks showcase Gotlieb’s rare ability to master the art of the slow burn, gradually building tension with subtlety and precision. The opener, “Phoenix,” exemplifies this approach. It begins with intricate piano phrases that nod to the European classical tradition, before the unexpected introduction of sitar and flute propels the piece into avant-garde territory, crafting a soundscape both adventurous and contemplative.
“Bon Tempe,” by contrast, is an exuberant, almost tribal piece driven by thunderous, African-inspired percussion. Its raw energy is a testament to Gotlieb’s versatility as a composer. On “Soulajule”—a standout track recently featured on our Progotronics compilation—Gotlieb’s lyrical piano playing takes center stage, radiating warmth and emotion. This stylistic diversity, spanning moods, influences, and rhythms, is a hallmark of Contours, Vol. 2.
“Elephant Rock” is a nostalgic nod to the 1970s fusion of progressive and jazz rock, while “Alpine Ring Pools” sees Gotlieb command his piano with finesse, complemented by woodwind textures and offbeat percussion that add layers of intrigue. The experimental essence of the album reaches its zenith with “Farallones,” arguably its boldest track. A kaleidoscope of motifs and influences converge into a dazzling, genre-defying opus that encapsulates the album’s adventurous spirit.
Contours, Vol. 2 positions Jake Gotlieb as a composer who expertly blends tradition with innovation, crafting music that is both rooted in the past and forward-thinking in its progression.
