Let me go on a limb here. Atropos is arguably one of the most dynamic and exploitative progressive metal albums the genre has to offer in 2024. On this studio debut, Alicante, Spain based progressive metal trio Chemosphere set on a journey that even the most conservative listener could find some value in. From start to finish there is a concentration and tonal framework interwoven with keen use of formal elements that grip the edges of abstract. A human element emerges within and is presented as profound lyrical phrasing, and world-class performances. A diverse outing with an unruly amount of genres crammed into ten songs, Atropos is a highly adventurous, very convoluted, wildly dynamic, but above everything an extremely enjoyable listen.
Chemosphere are in top form on Atropos, with their script-flipping abilities intact and their technical chops at their most extreme. This is a guitarist’s album first and foremost (although bass players and drummers are in for a treat as well), and the playing, while showy, is incendiary. Like a cross between Opeth and Tool, Chemosphere meld creative aptitude and roaring fury as they skate genres.
Atropos has it all: whirlwind scales, snaking solos, and amazingly intricate rhythm twists—with hair-raising howls and growls, parted by radio rock harmonies. It’s an experience, to say the least. Atropos is a record that embraces bold ambition, asking, “How far can creativity and depth take an album?” Its expansive vision showcases a fearless approach to musical exploration, inviting listeners to engage.
