After several singles and an EP, Nashville progressive/classic rock trio Gentry Blue come forth with the release of a full-length debut. Titled Fragments, this ten-tracker is a finely crafted exploration of folk-prog infused psychedelia, making a powerful impact right from the start.
From “What Lies to the Other Side” and “Fragments” to the sublime “Think I Might Be Crazy” and “Blackberry Bitter,” the sensibilities are fierce, the material manages to be both melodic and complex (and it rocks, too). The performances, led by Lydia Gentry-Debonis’s evocative vocals and violin, and supported by the multi-instrumental prowess of Brendan Gentry-Debonis and Sean Jannay, are nothing short of impressive. Each song on Fragments feels like a finely cut gem, with concise running times and a perfect balance of intricate accompaniments and solos, reflecting the trio’s considerable skill.
Gentry Blue excels in transforming a diverse range of influences into cohesive, straightforward songs within the Fragments framework. The album achieves a harmonious balance of creative elements, avoiding excessive experimentation while delivering a distinctive sound. The razor-sharp guitars, shared between Jannay and Brendan Gentry-Debonis, serve as the album’s unifying force, blazing through the mix and defining its character. Lydia, as described by the band, “becomes an oracle of emotion over the crushing instrumentals.”
Fans of the early-’70s singer/songwriter movement will find much to appreciate on Fragments, as Gentry Blue demonstrate their immense talent and unbounded musical potential.
Fragments is available on a CD and as a download from Bandcamp.
